Buyer Guide De-Icers & Salt Spreaders
For an in-depth look at the different types of salt spreaders and de-icers available, please read this guide.- Electric Salt Spreaders. Electric salt spreaders pump brine out through a tube. This automatic method eliminates the need to manually refill the salt reservoir.
- Manual Salt Spreaders. Manual salt spreaders require you to manually pour salt onto the salt reservoir. Salt is then pumped out by auger-like devices.
- Snow Pushers. Snow pushers are similar to salt spreaders, but designed for snow instead of salt.
- De-Icers. Similar to salt spreaders, de-icers pump brine out through a tube. This automatic method eliminates the need to manually refill the salt reservoir.
- Pusher De-Icers. Pusher de-icers, also called snow pushers, typically feature auger-like devices that push snow in a circular path.
How to choose De-Icers & Salt Spreaders
When shopping for salt and de-icers, it’s important to consider a few factors:- How much do you need? In some cases, salt spreaders and de-icers can be bulky. If you know that you’re going to be carrying your salt spreader in the car and need to use it frequently, it may be better to invest in a larger size.
- How wide is the spreader or de-icer? If you’re going to be using it on icy roads, a wide spreader or de-icer may be best.
- Do you need a storage case? If your salt spreader or de-icer is going to be used on a regular basis, you may want to consider investing in a storage case.
- Do you need a shovel attachment? If you regularly find yourself shoveling snow, you may want to consider buying a shovel attachment for your spreader or de-icer.
- Do you need a bag? Some spreaders and de-icers also include a bag for carrying salt, which can be convenient.
- Do you need a hand drier? Some spreaders and de-icers include a hand drier, which can make it easier to spread salt while still having your hands free.
How to maintain De-Icers & Salt Spreaders
When caring for your salt spreader or de-icer, it’s important to make sure that you clean it properly after each use.- Remove the salt: Before you begin cleaning your salt spreader or de-icer, first remove the accumulated salt. If the salt is hard to remove, use coarse salt or kosher salt to remove most salt buildup.
- Clean the salt spreader or de-icer: Fill your sink with warm, soapy water and add your salt spreader or de-icer. Use a toothpick or long-handled sponge to scrub the spreader or de-icer thoroughly.
- Remove excess salt: Rinse your salt spreader or de-icer thoroughly. If the salt remains stuck, soak it in warm, soapy water overnight, or soak it in a tray of baking soda and water for an hour, then rinse it.
- Dry the salt spreader or de-icer: Lay your salt spreader or de-icer on a towel to dry. To avoid rust, do not leave your salt spreader or de-icer exposed to the air.
- Store the salt spreader or de-icer: Store your salt spreader or de-icer in a place where it will not be exposed to extreme temperatures or moisture.
